Worli Koliwada

This project was designed for arch out loud’s RESIDE: Mumbai Mixed Housing competition in spring 2018. The proposal for redesigning Mumbai’s Worli Koliwada region comes from being inspired by the density and unique forms found in Mumbai’s historic areas, and a drive to add much needed green space into the existing urban fabric.

Small, one or two level single and double family homes are added in a neat urban grid up and down the tip of Mumbai. Green spaces, public squares and markets are injected into the new courtyards created by the new grid. The local fishing industry is given designated areas on the waterfront to thrive. Monuments, historic sites and temples are now celebrated by their own courtyards. Commercial spaces and restaurants are added to this neighborhood, which allows residents to be able to avoid the congested city centers and shop locally. This design intends to celebrate and center the colorful and active industries already existing in the historic neighborhood of Worli Koliwada.
